S Ravi Shankar hails from the picturesque coastal area of Triplicane, Chennai. Initially prepared to support his family as an Engineer, he found himself drawn towards the many stories of adventure heard from the fishermen in the area. Little did he know, these stories were significant enough to first stimulate his artistic imagination, and ultimately become a feature of his work.

He graduated from the Govt. College of Arts & Crafts, Chennai, with a Diploma in Fine Arts and a concentration in Graphic Design and Print-making. While drawn to art, and the processes of creation and self-exploration, he found himself looking past art theory to focus on the world outside the classroom, through a necessity to ‘commune with nature’. Under the guidance of Professor R.B.Bhaskaran, he discovered a personal expression through his own printmaking. This art form greatly allowed his experimental nature to blossom, granting him the freedom to expand in a multitude of directions at the same time. In 1987, Mumbai art critics claimed that “such experimental force has not been witnessed in any of the graphic shows we have had in the city”.

Ravi Shankar has participated in several major exhibitions around the world, and has displayed his work across 17 Solo Shows held in India, Germany & United Kingdom. Recipient of the National Award, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi in 2009, his talent has been recognised in the form of many awards, accolades and fellowships.
